The Fundamentals

The 4Cs of Diamond Quality

1

Cut

The most important factor — determines brilliance and light performance.

An Excellent or Ideal cut maximizes brilliance, fire, and scintillation. Even a high-color, high-clarity diamond will appear dull with a poor cut.

2

Color

Graded D (colorless) to Z (light yellow).

Colorless diamonds (D–F) are the rarest. Near-colorless (G–J) offer excellent value. Fancy colored diamonds follow a separate scale.

3

Clarity

Measures internal inclusions and external blemishes.

Most inclusions are invisible to the naked eye. VS1–VS2 diamonds offer excellent value — inclusions are minor and not visible without magnification.

4

Carat

Unit of weight — 1 carat equals 0.2 grams.

Larger diamonds are rarer and more valuable per carat. Lab-grown diamonds allow you to get a larger carat weight at a significantly lower price.

Growing Methods

CVD vs HPHT

CVD

Chemical Vapor Deposition

A diamond seed is placed in a carbon-rich gas chamber. Microwaves ionize the gas, depositing carbon atoms layer by layer over 2–4 weeks. CVD produces very pure, high-quality diamonds with excellent color.

  • Exceptional purity
  • Superior color grades
  • Precise control
  • Widely available

HPHT

High Pressure High Temperature

Mimics the natural conditions under which diamonds form in the earth — extreme heat (1,300–1,600°C) and pressure (5–6 GPa). HPHT is also used to improve the color of existing diamonds.

  • Natural process simulation
  • Excellent hardness
  • Can improve color
  • Cost-effective

Both CVD and HPHT diamonds are physically, chemically, and optically identical to mined diamonds. The choice between them is largely personal preference — both are excellent options.

Certification

IGI Certification

IGI

International Gemological Institute

The world's largest independent gem certification lab. IGI is the leading certifier for lab-grown diamonds, with specialized grading standards developed specifically for laboratory-grown stones. Every diamond at HalalDiamond comes with an IGI certificate verifying its cut, color, clarity, and carat weight.

IGI evaluates diamonds using the same rigorous 4Cs framework, ensuring every stone meets the highest standards of quality and transparency. Their reports include detailed measurements, proportions, and any notable characteristics.
